Much like getting an oil change for your car, regular cleaning and maintenance can be important for your hair care tools. The right care can help your hair care tools work better for longer while being more hygienic. This article will explore steps to care for and clean your hair care tools, like your blow-dryer, brushes, and more.

Cleaning Your Blow-Dryer Filter

Blow-dryers pull air from an intake area and use motors to blow it out as needed. They have intake filters to protect the mechanisms within from getting clogged. But the air filters can also get messy. A dirty air filter can make your blow dryer weaker and less efficient. A clogged air filter can lead to the motors within getting burned out.
There are 2 main ways to clean a blow dryer air filter. The first should work for most models, while the second may require special blow-dryers. For optimal cleaning results, always follow the care instructions for your blow-dryer as outlined in its manual.

Method 1: Cleaning Most Blow-Dryers

Start by unplugging your blow-dryer or removing the batteries if it is a wireless model. Identify the air intake area, and remove the cover if possible. Use a dry paper towel to wipe dirt or dust from the filter.  Some blow dryer models may include a cleaning brush for this step. If possible, use a vacuum tube to suck up any remaining dust or debris from the filter. Replace the cover, and your blow dryer should be cleared.

Method 2: Reverse Intake Models

Some higher-end blow dryers have a reverse intake setting. This can help blow dust and debris off the air intake filter. If your blow-dryer has a reverse setting, activate this while using a vacuum on the filter to clean up any blown particles. The model may also include a cleaning brush to help remove dust from the intake.

Cleaning Your Styling Irons

For flat irons or curling irons, the cleaning methods are generally the same. Residue from your hair, as well as products like hairspray, can be left behind on the styling irons. This residue can create unpleasant odors and pose fire hazards.  You should always start the process of cleaning these devices with them unplugged and at room temperature. This will help you avoid burns or other injuries. Use warm water and a microfiber cloth. Clean the plates and barrels thoroughly. Dry the device with a dry cloth after cleaning. Make sure the device is completely dry before plugging it in or using it again. If you use your heat styling irons often, clean them weekly. If you use them only a few times a year, clean them after use.

Bushes and Combs

Brushes and combs can receive significant buildup of hair, skin cells, hair oil, and product. Over time, this buildup can look gunky and lead to your brushes smelling gross. As a result, regularly cleaning your brushes and combs can be important for your overall hygiene. To start, pull any hair strands off your comb/brush and throw them away. Then, fill your bathroom sink with warm water. Add a cleansing or clarifying shampoo to the water and mix it in with the brush or comb. Let them soak for a few minutes to loosen up any gunky buildup. While under the water, use another brush or comb to clear gunk off your brushes. Cotton swabs can also be effective at cleaning between the tines of your comb. Drain the sink, and lay the cleaned brushes out on a towel. Let your combs and brushes air dry.
